How discovery flights work in Thailand
Thailand's recreational aviation is overseen by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT). Tourist-facing flying experiences fall into four categories:
- Light aircraft discovery flights — Cessna 152/172 with a CAAT-licensed instructor; the closest equivalent to the FAA "discovery flight" or CASA "trial introductory flight"
- Microlight and ultralight rides — 2-seat trike-style aircraft (Rotax-powered), passenger flies with a CAAT-recognized Ultralight Pilot License (UPL) holder
- Tandem paramotor flights — powered paragliding, popular in Chiang Mai and Pattaya
- Helicopter scenic tours — Airbus EC130/EC135 charter, mainly Phuket and Bangkok
A discovery flight means you fly next to a licensed instructor — in a light aircraft, microlight, or paramotor. You get a safety brief, a 15–60 minute scenic flight, and on fixed-wing flights, usually a few minutes of stick time on the controls. Total time on the ground is 30 min to 3 hrs depending on operator and pickup logistics. Whether you sit left seat or right seat in a fixed-wing depends on the operator: some put guests in the left (pilot-in-command) seat because the instructor flies legally from the right, while others keep guests in the right seat. Microlight and paramotor passengers sit in the rear.
Pricing is per flight, not per hour — the opposite of how schools quote real PPL training. Most operators publish English websites, accept card payment, and integrate with the major tourism platforms.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a pilot license to do a discovery flight in Thailand?
No. A CAAT-licensed instructor flies the aircraft. You sit in the right seat (fixed-wing) or rear seat (microlight, paramotor) and typically get a few minutes of hands-on stick time on fixed-wing flights.
Can foreigners book a discovery flight in Thailand?
Yes — easily. Thailand is the most foreigner-friendly market in Southeast Asia for tourist flying. Most operators publish full English websites, accept card payment, and list on Klook, GetYourGuide, Viator, and Expedia.
How much does a discovery flight in Thailand cost?
Entry pricing ranges from ฿3,100 (~US$87) for a 15-minute microlight ride at Chiang Mai Sky Adventure to ฿11,900 (~US$340) for a 30-minute helicopter scenic with Skydance in Phuket. A real fixed-wing Cessna intro flight at Thai Flying Club is ฿4,250 for 30 minutes.
What aircraft will I fly in?
Depends on the operator. Cessna 150/152/172 for fixed-wing intro flights at Thai Flying Club, priAviate, and Eastern Flying Club. 2-seat microlight trikes at BFA, Chiang Mai Sky Adventure, and TSA. Tandem paramotor at Flying Bird and BFA. Airbus EC130 helicopter at Skydance. Cessna Caravan amphibian for Siam Seaplane scenic flights.
Where can I do a discovery flight near Bangkok?
Thai Flying Club at Bang Phra (~1.5 hrs drive) is the closest real fixed-wing intro flight. priAviate is the premium choice, with Discovery Flights operating across Prachinburi, Pattaya, Hua Hin, Chiang Mai, and Phuket. For something within metro Bangkok, options are limited — most flying happens at Eastern Airport (Pattaya) or further afield.
Where can I do a discovery flight in Chiang Mai?
Chiang Mai Sky Adventure for microlight (since 1998, cheapest in country). Flying Bird Paramotor for tandem paramotor over rice fields. Both run sunrise and sunset slots — no midday flights due to heat and thermals.
Where can I do a helicopter scenic flight in Thailand?
Skydance Helicopters in Phuket is the dominant operator, with shared-seat tours and private charter. They also run charter from Bangkok using the EC135.
Does a Thailand discovery flight count toward a pilot license?
Generally no. Hours logged toward an FAA, EASA, CASA, or CAAS license must be flown with an instructor whose qualifications are recognized by your licensing authority, in a registered training aircraft. A Thai introductory flight with a CAAT-licensed instructor doesn't transfer cleanly. If you're seriously evaluating Thailand for full PPL training, the route is via CAAT-approved schools — see our separate guide on recreational flying pathways in Thailand.
What's the best time of year to fly in Thailand?
Cool, dry season (November–February) is best for visibility and stable weather across the country. Hot season (March–May) brings haze and afternoon thermals — fly at sunrise. Rainy season (June–October) sees frequent cancellations, especially in the south and east. All flights are VFR — confirm the day before.
Are children allowed?
Varies by operator. Chiang Mai Sky Adventure accepts ages 8+. Pattaya Air Adventure accepts 10–75. BFA and most paramotor operators set 10+ as the floor. Skydance helicopter tours have no published minimum but require booking child seats separately if under 100 cm.
Are there weight restrictions?
Yes — and they're more enforced in Thailand than in most markets. Most microlight and paramotor operators cap at 100–110 kg. Skydance charges a 2-seat fare for passengers over 100 kg. Pattaya Air Adventure surcharges ฿100/kg between 96–110 kg, plus ฿1,500 flat between 110–120 kg.
Practical notes
- English web presence is the canary. Thailand is the easiest market in Asia on this metric — almost every tourist-facing operator publishes a working English site. The exceptions tend to be smaller domestic-focused clubs that don't court international visitors. If a school doesn't have an English page, assume English-speaking instruction may also be limited.
- Booking surfaces: Klook, GetYourGuide, Viator, and Expedia all carry Thai flying experiences with English checkout and same-day or next-day confirmation. Direct booking is usually cheaper, but aggregator booking is friction-free.
- Weather dependency: All flights are VFR. Sunrise and sunset slots are the norm — midday is too hot, hazy, and thermally unstable. Confirm flight status the day before.
- Driving time matters: The two best fixed-wing intro flights (Thai Flying Club, priAviate) are 1.5–2 hrs by road from Bangkok. Build a full day around the flight, or stay overnight in Pattaya or Prachinburi.
- Licensing path: Thailand's full PPL is run only by CAAT-approved flight schools (ATOs) such as Bangkok Aviation Center, Thai Inter Flying, and the CATC — clubs are no longer permitted to offer PPL training. CAAT may allow clubs to offer LAPL from next year, though confirmation is pending. Not relevant for a discovery flight, but worth knowing if you want to come back and train — full breakdown in our recreational flying pathways in Thailand guide.
