Discovery flights in South Korea: a tourist's guide.

Korea is one of the most accessible places in Asia for a tourist discovery flight — also called an experience flight, or 체험비행 locally. No license required, instructor flies with you, most operators charge a flat per-flight fee rather than by the hour.

Updated May 2026. But details may change, so always check with the respective providers.

How discovery flights work in Korea

Korea's recreational aviation runs almost entirely on light sport aircraft (LSA, 경량항공기) and ultralights (초경량비행장치). Three bodies under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) share oversight:

  • Korea Office of Civil Aviation (KOCA) — national civil aviation regulator
  • Korea Transportation Safety Authority (KOTSA) — licensing and exams
  • Korea Institute of Aviation Safety Technology (KIAST) — LSA and ultralight safety certification

A discovery flight (체험비행) means you sit in the right seat of a 2-seat LSA next to a licensed instructor. You get a safety brief, a short scenic flight, and usually a few minutes of stick time. Total time on the ground is 30–60 minutes for a 10–30 minute flight.

Pricing is per flight, not per hour — the opposite of how schools in Australia, the US, or Singapore quote intro flights. Booking is overwhelmingly Korean-only, by phone or KakaoTalk. The two reliable English booking surfaces are Myrealtrip and Klook.

  • Everland circuit: ₩300,000–420,000

Best for families and first-timers. Zero friction.

중원항공 (Jungwon Aviation) — Boryeong

Ministry-designated training organization based at Boryeong Airfield on the west coast. More structured than a typical experience operator — they run full pilot training alongside tourist flights.

  • Experience flights: 20 min (airfield circuit) to 90 min (scenic coastal routes)
  • Routes: Anmyeon Island, Daecheon Beach, Buyeo, Hongseong, Yesan
  • Booking: Reservation consultation first, then confirmed booking; safety waiver on day
  • Website: jwflight.com
  • English web: None. Korean only, despite ATO designation.
Better as a day trip — pair with Daecheon Beach or Anmyeon Island.

한서대학교 비행교육원 (Hanseo University Flight Center) — Taean-gun

University-affiliated training center near Taean Airfield, ~2.5 hrs from Seoul. Treat this as a serious training facility, not a tourist operator — official materials emphasize structured rotorcraft training, not one-off rides.

  • Aircraft (per official site): Robinson R-22 and R-44 (rotorcraft Private Pilot Course)
  • Rotor PPL Course: ₩53,662,500 / 60 hrs / ~4 months
  • Website: hanseoflight.hanseo.ac.kr
  • English web: Full English subsite — staff, courses, facilities, fleet. The strongest English web presence of any school in this guide, but training-focused, no public discovery flight surface.
Call ahead before assuming discovery flights are available.

Near Busan (Gyeongsangnam-do)

함안 경비행장 (Haman Airfield) — Haman

  • 30 min: ₩170,000 weekday / ₩180,000 weekend
  • 60 min: ₩270,000 weekday / ₩280,000 weekend
  • Hours: 09:00–18:00, year-round (연중무휴)

Cheapest entry price in the country. Pair with Haman's Akyang ecological park for a half-day.

합천에어랜드 (Airland Aviation) — Hapcheon

Ministry-designated LSA school near Hwangmae Mountain. Strong on aircraft variety — sells and maintains its own fleet. Remote, but spectacular scenery.

  • Aircraft: Aeroprakt A-32, ATEC 321 Faeta NG, Legend 600 (amphibious)
  • Routes: Hwangmae Mountain, Hapcheon Lake, Moasan Rock, Hapcheon film theme park

  • Website: airlandaviation.com
  • English web: None. airlandaviation.com is Korean only; Facebook and Instagram also Korean.
Worth it if combining with southern Korea travel. Not practical as a standalone stop from Seoul.

Jeju — discovery flights are not available

Jeju is controlled airspace. Jeju International Airport handles dense commercial traffic, and there are no public LSA or general aviation discovery flight operators on the island.

  • Korean Air Flight Academy runs a training airfield (정석비행장, Jeongseok) in Seogwipo — closed to the public.
  • Jeju Aerospace Museum in Seogwipo has static aircraft and simulators — worth a visit, but no actual flying.
  • eVTOL air taxi update: A 2022 announcement targeting 2025 operations has slipped. In September 2025, Skyports Infrastructure was appointed lead vertiport developer for Jeju's network (Jeju International Airport, Jungmun, Seongsan). Commercial operations now planned for 2028.
Skip Jeju for flying. The museum is the consolation prize.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a pilot license to do a discovery flight in Korea?

No. A licensed instructor flies the aircraft. You sit in the co-pilot seat and typically get a few minutes of hands-on stick time during the flight.

Can foreigners book a discovery flight in Korea?

Yes. There is no nationality or residency restriction. The friction is language — most operators only take bookings in Korean by phone or KakaoTalk. Skynuri via Myrealtrip and Gongju via Klook are the two reliable English-language booking flows.

How much does a discovery flight in Korea cost?

Entry pricing ranges from ₩70,000 (~US$50) for a 10-minute flight at Haman Airfield to ₩96,000–150,000 (~US$70–110) for a standard 20-minute LSA experience at Skynuri or LSA Aviation. Longer scenic routes (Chungju Lake, west coast circuit) can reach ₩900,000–1,080,000.

What aircraft will I fly in?

Light sport aircraft — typically 2-seat designs like the BRISTELL Classic, SKYLEADER-500, Aeroprakt A-32, or ATEC 321 Faeta NG. All Rotax-powered. Hanseo University is the exception, flying Robinson R-22 / R-44 helicopters.

Where can I do a discovery flight near Seoul?

Skynuri in Hwaseong (~1 hr south) is the closest and most tourist-friendly. LSA Aviation in Yeoju is the alternative if you want a specific scenic route like Nami Island or Everland.

Where can I do a discovery flight near Busan?

Haman Airfield in Gyeongsangnam-do, ~1–1.5 hours northwest of Busan. It's also the cheapest entry point in the country at ₩70,000 for 10 minutes.

Can I do a discovery flight in Jeju?

No. Jeju is controlled airspace serving a major commercial airport, and there are no public discovery flight operators on the island. eVTOL air taxis are now planned for 2028.

Does a Korean discovery flight count toward a pilot license?

Generally no. Logged hours for an FAA, EASA, CASA, or CAAS license must be flown with an instructor whose qualifications are recognized by your licensing authority, in a registered training aircraft. A Korean LSA experience flight with a KOTSA-licensed instructor does not transfer cleanly. Ask the school directly if logging matters to you.

What's the best time of year to fly in Korea?

Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) for visibility and stable weather. Summer monsoon (late June–early August) and winter (December–February) bring more cancellations. All flights are VFR — confirm the day before.

Are children allowed?

Skynuri's stated minimum age is 48 months. Other schools vary; ask when booking.

Practical notes

  • English web presence is the canary. A flight school's own English website — or absence of one — is the single most reliable predictor of how smooth the on-the-ground experience will be for an English-speaking visitor. Of the seven schools in this guide, only Hanseo University runs a full English site, and it isn't a tourist operator. Skynuri runs a partial English presence via its booking page and a sister marketing site. Everyone else expects you to either speak Korean or route through an aggregator (Klook, Myrealtrip) and rely on the platform to translate.
  • Booking language: Most schools are Korean-only. Myrealtrip and Klook are the easiest English-language booking surfaces.
  • Weather dependency: All flights are VFR — cancellations happen. Confirm the day before.
  • Licensing path: Korea's LSA license (경량항공기 조종사) requires a written exam administered by KOTSA, in Korean. Not relevant for a discovery flight, but worth knowing if you want to come back and train.
