CASA has opened consultation on Draft Advisory Circular AC 91-27, a single guidance document for instrument flight procedures. Feedback is via the Consultation Hub and closes 18 March 2026.

What it is

CASA is consulting on a draft advisory circular, AC 91-27 – Instrument flight procedures (operational information). The goal is a single, clear guidance document for accepted industry procedures as IFR procedures have become more complex

Why it matters

The draft AC aims to:

  • Provide information on the use of instrument flight procedures in Australia
  • Explain the reasons for and background to industry practices for instrument flight
  • Clarify safety precautions to be used with instrument flight procedures

Operational guidance and clarity across:

  • Background to IFR flight
  • Airspace and ground infrastructure requirements
  • Instrument approach procedures
  • Non-precision approaches (NPAs)
  • Approach procedures with vertical guidance (APVs)
  • Precision approach procedures (PAs)
  • Procedure entry, holding, and noise abatement procedures
  • Precision runway monitor (PRM) instrument approach procedures
  • Helicopter procedures
